Last spring I was able to
keep in touch with an old friend Linda. And I would remember that
she always told me that she would like to run a marathon one day.
She would tell me the story of one Sunday morning in the gym
while she was on the tread mill running and the marathon was
coming live on NBC and she would imagine herself running and
being apart of it which motivated her even more when running on
the tread mill.
Well my training buddy Fazal registered for NYC marathon but he
could not take part because of his religious observation of
Ramadan, he will be fasting for a month and from previous
experiences knows that this time there is no way that he was
going to run it so he also sign up for Chicago which was in
October and was able to run that instead of NYC.
Well I made the call to Linda and I ask her if she wanted to run
the marathon that I had a number and if she wanted to she can use
it, now the funny thing is Linda lives in New Jersey and it was
going to be a hell of a commute to queens so she can train. So we
gave it a lot of thought and we came to an agreement that she
will come to New York at least three days, I will change my
schedule and take Tuesdays and Saturdays off, Thursday I will go
in late and close the store, this will give her two days in the
week and Saturday. Well she quit her second job at the restaurant
and was now embarking onto a new journey.
As a trainer I encourage her a lot to be apart of this running
community, I could have seen that she needed it in her life, the
pages was turning in her life and she was maturing and needed to
think for herself, there was decisions to be made and this would
give here the time and place to focus and plan her life.I was
amaze of her determination and dedication, sometimes we would
train until 10pm at night because I would run for 5pm -7pm and
the she would show up like 7:30 pm then I will run with her and
keep her company until she was finished or sometimes just sit in
the park and count laps for her or pass out Gatorade.
Linda then became a member of NY road runners club and was
running 10k’s and 5k’s she also did the Bronx half
marathon and let me tell you that was an experience for her, it
was blazing hot it was her first long race like that, another
memorable race was cow harbor 10k, from one extreme to another,
this race was a complete wash out, there was a major storm in
Northport LI. At the finish line there was water up to your
knees, it was pouring rain, windy and cold. I could not find her
at the finish so I had to stand in the middle of the road looking
for her, when we found each other we just had to laugh. Great
memories form great races.
So our marathon training continued with all day runs on
Saturdays, she would run for 4 hours training to stay up on her
leg for as long as possible ,sometimes take a lunch break and
then continue. I sustained a major injury last summer so I was
not running as much as I should ,by all means I should have
rested and not run any more but it’s hard to explain ,there
is an addiction to running and I am hooked really bad, I would
still train with her and continue to push her in her training.
Linda was doing really fine but then came a few problems someone
slammed into her parked car by her job site and now she had no
transport, so off we went car hunting for a while ,she was still
able to use her mom car and showed up for training when one day I
actually drove in the car and told her ,no way that she was going
to commute with that car, the car was just not reliable for the
distance that she had to commute, this had put a spin to
her life and again she was faced with decisions and
battles. more>>>
